HALIFAX, NS— Tragedy struck on Tuesday afternoon as Master’s student Melanie Jenkins was caught in a sudden stampede of students.
Prof. Cait McNamara ended her first year physiology class in the Ondaatje auditorium at 3:18 PM, seven minutes before the scheduled end time. “The class had no questions for me, so I thought it would be nice to let them leave a little early.” McNamara claims.
Jenkins, who was walking past the McCain building at the time, was struck by the flood of students. “I can’t help but feel responsible,” said McNamara. “This is not a mistake I’ll be making again.”
A coroner working with the HRP spoke to The Mackerel about the incident. “There is nothing that could’ve been done for Melanie. That volume of blundstones stepping on you? No one could survive that.”
Dalhousie is asking its community to step lightly in memory of Jenkins.
