HALIFAX, N.S. — Following a historic win in a low commitment, non-competitive, casual intramural soccer game, the Mackerel was able to land an exclusive interview with Leona Messy, the most valuable player on her team.

Mackerel: Tell us about your team. What is your team name?

Messy: We dribbled between a few names. We thought about “balls to the wall,” “beating my cleat” and “soccer players,” but ultimately we are a serious team, we wanted to choose a name that commanded power and respect, so we landed on “soccer? I hardly know her!”

Mackerel: And what was the reaction from your team when you won your last game?

Messy: We kept our composure pretty well, we are a pretty focused group so we don’t let a win hype us up too much. So the celebrations were limited to some body slides, a keg stand, dumping a bucket of Gatorade on the referee, setting off fireworks and a parade down Spring Garden Road. So nothing too crazy.

Mackerel: How does it feel to earn the MVP title this week? What do you think you did to deserve it?

Messy: It feels amazing, nothing beats the rush of knowing you could be there for your team. And boy, do I think I earned it this week. I brought orange slices.

Mackerel: Amazing. Good for you. At what point did you and your team realize the game was yours to win?

Messy: It was a tough road to get there, but I think we realized the game was ours to win when the other team didn’t show up.
