Scooter McGriffin, a zamboni driver at the Halifax Forum, has been accused of selling Dalhousie University intramural teams’ game plans.
McGriffin spent 40 years at the Forum. The Cheese Factory told the Dal Mackerel the zamboni driver was caught creeping outside teams’ locker rooms where he listened in to their pre-game strategy. McGriffin reportedly took multiple payments from Hattrick Swayzes, a co-ed recreational hockey team. The Hattrick Swayzes have taken home the title the last four years, but the scandal has put a damper on their dynasty.
Cooper Tuck, another employee at the Forum was the first witness to the deal when he found team captain Fred Barnes exchanging a duffel bag with McGriffin, which he later found to be full of cash. Tuck made his manager aware of the incident, but his coworker was let off with a warning.
“I would’ve fired him right away,” Tuck said.
McGriffin was then caught by Avery Clark, a member of The Cheese Factory, who left the locker room during a game against the Swayzes to retrieve his stick and was shocked to find McGriffin with his ear to the door. Clark’s reaction instantly drew the attention of the rest of his teammates.
“I wasn’t letting him off the hook,” Clark said. “He might’ve seen me in my undies.”
The Hattrick Swayzes were surprised when they opened their dressing room door to a hallway full of furious The Cheese Factory players. Their players reportedly “played dumb,” but Tuck connected the duffle bag to the spying and the manager woke up.
McGriffin was fired on the spot.
This caught the attention of past members of the Dalhousie University hockey intramural dynasty who said the spying dated back years. Peter Grant was a member of the team two years ago but graduated in 2024. He confessed they had paid McGriffin every game for insight the two seasons he was there.
“I didn’t think it was right, but honestly I didn’t care,” Grant said. “I would do it again if it got me another champions T-shirt.”
