HALIFAX, N.S. — Marco MacLeod, Nova Scotia’s former energy minister, is set to perform at this year’s Magnetic World Music Festival on Sept. 25 alongside fellow artists Sexyy Red, Swae Lee and Alesso.
“We’re all very excited that Marco will be performing,” says Magna T. Werld, one of the event’s organizers. “At this point, any artist will be better than 21 Savage was last year.”
MacLeod, also known by his artist name Meadowville, is a SoundCloud rapper from New Glasgow, N.S., who stepped down from the provincial cabinet to return full-time to his music career.
At the festival, MacLeod plans to perform in a new genre, shifting from rap to country and western. MacLeod says the switch was a timely decision after lyrics from his extended play — released over a decade ago — recently sparked debate around women’s rights in Nova Scotia.
MacLeod says his performance at the festival is a way to make amends for his hurtful lyrics by performing with Sexyy Red during her set, who is a woman (fact-checked).
It’s rumoured he will perform Drake’s parts on both “Cheetah Print” and “Rich Baby Daddy.” The notable lesbian feminist Drake has made no comment at this time.
MacLeod is set to debut his new album Pictou County Raised at the festival, a country album he says draws inspiration from both Jelly Roll and Post Malone.
“Yessirree, my new album is rootin’ tootin’,” says MacLeod. “My gosh-darned god-fearing country peeps are my day ones.”
MacLeod says he denies any allegations that he is capitalizing on misogyny by appealing to the country music audience.
MacLeod told the Mackerel that his performance will absolutely not include his hit track “George Jones,” even though he knows it would “go hard.”
You can see MacLeod live at Magnetic World with V-V-VIP tickets starting at just $4,999.99 —
